Construction planning

TEDA spreads out in an area of 40 square kilometers. Its southern part, known as the Southern Living Zone, is for residential apartments, government units and financial services, while the northern part, known as the Industrial Zone, is for manufacturing. The two parts are divided by Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Highway. The Living Zone takes up a total area of 11.3 square kilometers, while the Industrial Zone 26.4 square kilometers. In addition, academic facilities and parks take up a total area of 3.1 square kilometers. By the end of 2004, a total of 39 square kilometers of land had been reclaimed, including 29.2 square kilometers for the Industrial Zone and 9.8 square kilometers for the Living Zone.

Accessibility

TEDA is advantageously located in an area easily accessible and surrounded by economically developed cities.

TEDA is 130 kilometers away from Beijing and 40 kilometers from Tianjin. Across the Bohai Sea are Japan and Korean Peninsula. It is easily accessible by land, sea and air. 5 kilometers away to its east is Tianjin Port, which is China’s largest artificial port, China’s second largest containers
handling port as well as northeast Asia’s closest access point to Eurasia Land Bridge. It is 38 kilometers from Tianjin International Airport, which is proud of its largest air cargo handling center status in the country. Such a well-knit network of highways, railways and light rails provides fast and easy access to Beijing International Airport, Tianjin International Airport and Tianjin Port. In October of 2003, Tianjin-Binhai Light Rail was fully operational, setting six national records in terms of the longest light rail, the shortest construction period, the highest technological content, etc. It has become an economic artery weaving together municipal Tianjin and TEDA.

Amenities

By the end of 2004, TEDA had invested a total of RMB 20.2 billion in infrastructure development. By fast adapting itself to the state’s macro-economic readjustment measures and restructuring fixed assets investments, TEDA has successfully sustained a stable and healthy growth in investments. In 2004, fixed assets investment reached RMB 15.683 billion, representing an increase of 20.1% over the previous year. Top-notch projects completed include Investment Service Center, Customs Building, TEDA Library, Financial Services Zone, TEDA International Cardiovascular Diseases
Hospital, International Convention Center, International Conference & Exhibition Center and TEDA Football Field. In particular, TEDA Investment Services Center and Customs Building were honored with “Luban Award”, the highest honor award in the architectural community of the country. The construction of residential apartments, commercial and financial buildings, cultural and entertainment facilities, sports facilities and medical health facilities is going forward at full throttle and has provided strong incentives to TEDA’s economic and social progress.

Environment

TEDA is fully committed to improving its ecological quality and many efforts in that respect have paid dividends. In 2004, TEDA Microelectronics Industrial Zone was completed. The area of newly landscaped green lands in TEDA increased by over 20 million square meters. By the end of the year, TEDA’s total area of landscaped land had reached 7.85 million square meters, including 288,870 square meters of green public spaces. That means 35% of TEDA’s land is covered by vegetation, with a per capita vegetation-covered area of 75.70 square meters. TEDA has also constructed
environmental quality enhancement facilities for wastewater recycling, seawater desalinization and geothermal energy, all of which have advanced technologies in the country. In 2004, TEDA’s application for creating the “State Biological Industrial Model Zone” was granted approval by the State Environmental Protection Administration. By the end of the year, a total of 41 enterprises operating in TEDA had been certified by ISO14001 Environmental System. TEDA was the first to be certified by the system and was designated as an “ISO14000 State Model Zone” and a “Chinese Industrial Areas’ Environmental Management Test Zone”.
