The Work Meeting 2005 of TEDA Bonded Area is convened. The meeting charts out the roadmap for the year: focus on fostering TEDA’s innovative capabilities and maintaining rapid economic growth and competitive edge; further beef up efforts to attract outside investments, promote the growth of various industries, reclaim lands, improve management and deepen reforms; brave all difficulties, get prepared for another 20 years of high growth and contribute to the “Three Steps” strategic vision of Tianjin Municipal Government.
January 9
Foundation stone laying ceremony takes place at TEDA for the Biological Center under Tianjin Tianlong Agricultural Technologies Co., Ltd. The company is a high-tech enterprise doing research on new rice varieties selection and cultivation, bioengineering technologies, and agricultural and sideline products processing. It also promotes the application of new technologies in industries. The Chief Researcher is Academician Yuan Longping who is hailed as the “Father of Hybrid Rice” in the world.
January 18
The foundation stone laying ceremony for Cabot Chemical (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. takes place at TEDA. The first phase of this Sino-US joint venture which costs USD 28 million is a top class production line based on Cabot Corporation’s advanced carbon black technology.
January 24
Saifu Growth Entrepreneurship Investment Fund, the first “non-legal-person-status” business startup fund of foreign investment ever in China’s history of business startup and investment, is registered at TEDA. The shareholders of the fund are Tianjin Enterpreneurship Investment Co., Ltd. and the world famous risk investment company SOFTBANK Asia Infrastructure Fund. Each shareholder makes a contribution of USD 10 million. The new fund will focus on investments in products and technologies in fields of wideband network, wireless communication, digital TV, auto electronics and integrated circuit.
February
The construction of the State Engineering Research Center for Computer Virus Prevention Technologies is approved by the State Development and Reform Commission (SDRC). The price tag for the research center located in TEDA is RMB 87.67 million. The construction will be completed within 3 years and will be partially financed by the state.
March 15
Kennametal celebrates the start of the construction of its plant at TEDA West. The plant known as Kennametal (China) Co., Ltd. costs an initial investment of USD30-40 million. Kennametal is a respected global manufacturer of world advanced metal cutting equipment. The plant will be its biggest processing center and the biggest global production base outside the United States.
March 17-18
The Second International Investment Promotion Forum takes place at TEDA Marriot Hotel. The theme of the forum is to “promote a new round of direct investments from foreign countries”. The event focuses on topics such as the outlook of direct foreign investments, China investment strategies of multinational corporations, global investment strategies of Chinese enterprises, and the best role that investment promotion organizations could play.
March 21
Tianjin Toyota-FAW celebrates the completion of its second TEDA plant and the rollout of Crown. The company is the largest auto joint venture by FAW of China and Toyota of Japan. This new plant is designed based on world advanced technologies, and its main product is Crown.
April 6
The foundation stone laying ceremony for the plant of ITT Industrial (Tianjin) Electronics Components Co., Ltd. takes place at TEDA. ITT is the world’s leading multinational industrial manufacturer and one of the world’s top 10 suppliers of mobile communications equipment spare parts. The plant with a price tag of USD 12.5 million is put into operation in 2006. Its product line includes electronic button, keyboard, intelligence switch, etc.
April 22
The construction of the plant of Kumho Tires (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. starts at TEDA West. The plant owned by Kumho Tires spreads out in an area of 310,000 square meters, with an investment of USD 185 million in the first phase and an additional investment of USD 130 million in the second. Its annul output of tires is 10.4 million. Production is expected to begin in July of 2006.
April 30
Doctor Chen Naike with BoYi Pneumatic Technology Institute (Tianjin)Co, Ltd. is named as the “National Workers’ Model”. Doctor Chen started his business in TEDA in 1997. His research institute has produced 7 patents, including 3 invention patents. In addition, 4 of his scientific research achievements have been evaluated and recognized as world advanced or domestically advanced.
May 14
TEDA West Investment Services Center is put into service. The functional departments of TEDA Administration Committee, Energy Supply Company and various public service organizations will move into the facility and offer a wide spectrum of services to investors.
May 16
Jurong Technologies (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. opens for business at TEDA. This is an investment of USD 12 million by Jurong Technologies from Singapore. The company manufactures handset circuit boards.
May 26
“2005 International Manufacturing Industry (Mobile Phone) Procurement and Supply Fair” takes place at TEDA international Conference & Exhibition Center. The event offers a total exhibition area of 15,000 square meters, accommodating 543 exhibition stands of 326 enterprises, including 100 exhibition stands of 30 buyers and 442 exhibition stands of 296 suppliers.
May 26
The governmental delegation led by Vice Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad of Laos pays a visit to TEDA. The Prime Minister expresses admiration for TEDA’s splashy economic achievements.

Mr. Zhou Genfa, founder and chairman of Tianjin Fusugen Biotechnology Co., Ltd., is honored as one of the “Tianjin Top Ten Outstanding Youths”. After obtaining his Doctor Degree at Harvard University, Doctor Zhou came to TEDA to start up his business. His “Fusogen”, a medicine that inhibits HIV Aids virus membranes fusion, has been granted patent status in the United States and recognized as the State Class One Innovative Medicine. It is believed that the new medicine is 20 times more effective than T-20, which is a medicine of the same category available on European and US markets.
June 16
Electro Rent (Tianjin), China’s first leasing company of 100% foreign investment, opens for business at TEDA. With a paid in capital of USD 2 million, the company is in the business of detection instruments leasing for communications and electronics equipment manufacturers.
June 24-26
Mr. Wen Jiabao, Permanent Member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and Prime Minister of the State Council, pays an inspection visit to Tianjin. He visits some enterprises in TEDA including Toyota-FAW. He points out that Tianjin should further develop Binhai New Area and make it contribute more to the economic growth of Tianjin and Bohai Sea Economic Ring.
June 26
The Sixth ASEM FMM (Asia-Europe Meeting - Finance Ministers’ Meeting) takes place at TEDA Marriot Hotel. Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao makes a speech at the meeting. The meeting produces two documents: Chairman’s Statement of the Sixth ASEM FMM and Tianjin Initiative on Closer ASEM Economic and Financial Cooperation. These two documents will have a significant influence on advancing closer ASEM economic partnership. This is the first large meeting after the membership of ASEM FMM extends to 39. Top-ranking officials from governments and international organizations attend the conference.

The State Stem Cell Engineering Products Base at TEDA is accepted after being inspected and checked. This is a project approved by the State Development and Reform Commission (SDRC) and named by Tianjin Municipal Government as Tianjin’s “Key High-Tech Project”. Its Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Bank is the world’s largest cell bank, one of the first stem cell banks approved by the Ministry of Health of China and also one of the first umbilical cord stem cell banks recognized by Asia Umbilical Cord Blood Bank Organization.
July 12
The world’s largest fluoromaterials manufacturer, a corporation from US, opens its facility in TEDA. This new facility called “Sanye Technologies (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. is the sole operation in China in which the US corporation has 100% stake and will use its patent techniques to manufacture a rich assortment of additives applied in printing ink and paintings.
July 21
TEDA and Saife from Sweden sign a cooperative agreement on TEDA Residents Plaza. According to this arrangement, TEDA will provide policy support to the company that is run in TEDA Residents Plaza a multifunctional commercial and recreational area of dominant European themes. The unique architectural styles in TEDA Citizens Plaza will make the plaza a signature landmark of Binhai New Area. When completed, the plaza will feature 14-storied super-large commercial spaces and international commercial areas of 200,000 square meters. It will offer a galaxy of functions including shopping, food, entertainment and culture. Representing a modern new lifestyle, the whole plaza will put together world recognized clubs for A-listers, five-star theaters, skating courses, bars and hotels.

The ceremony for the creation of Tianjin TEDA Broadcast and TV Network Co., Ltd. and the logo unveiling for China Media University Research and Field Study Base takes place at TEDA Marriot Hotel. High-ranking official of Tianjin Municipal Government Liu Shengyu cuts the ribbon at the ceremony.
July 26
Tianjin Binhai Express Transport Development Co., Ltd. and Group LOHR from France sign 3 contracts on establishment of a joint venture, vehicles procurement and vehicles technical services. This symbolizes that LOHR’s new urban public transport systems will be put into service in China’s public transport sector.
July 27
TEDA Administration Committee passes the “Implementation Plan on TEDA Investment and Financing System Reform” and its supporting schemes. This symbolizes that encouraging results have been obtained in the work of regional investment and financing system reforms.
July 28
Tianjin Ikuda Foods Co., Ltd., a joint venture by BVI Cakes and Japan’s Ikuda Fruit Products Co., Ltd., is formed at TEDA. With an investment of USD 12 million, the joint venture develops and manufactures fruit products.
July 30
In accordance with TEDA’s “Implementation Plan on TEDA Investment and Financing System Reform”, it is decided at the 15th Director Meeting of TEDA Administration Committee to create TEDA Public Interest Affairs Bureau. The new organization reports to TEDA Administration Committee and has 3 functions: urban utilities, energy and overall affairs handling.
August 4
The foundation stone laying ceremony for John Deer (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. takes place at TEDA. Key figures present at the ceremony include Member of the Standing Committee of Tianjin Municipal Government and Director of the Working Committee of TEDA Bonded Area Pi Qiansheng, Director of TEDA Administration Committee Li Yong and Chairman of Board and CEO Robert Rhein of John Deer of the United States. John Deer is a leading global manufacturer of agricultural equipment. The company invests USD 40 million in building a plant at TEDA, which manufactures advanced agricultural equipment of fine workmanship, including tractor transmissions that can be fitted onto John Deer’s tractors manufactured worldwide.

King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni pays a visit to TEDA. He is shown around at Motorola’s plant.
August 21-22
“2005 Chinese Top 500 Enterprises Release” and “Summit Forum on Expediting the Fostering of Internationally Competitive Large Enterprises” take place at TEDA. The theme of the event is the “growth of Chinese large enterprises in globalization”. 6 topics covered include “road to a manufacturing power”, “recipe of leading enterprises to achieve competitive edge”, “enterprise ownership change and the reality and outlook of corporate governance”, “regional competitive edge and growth of enterprises”, “capital market – the support for the growth of enterprises”, “concerted and win-win development – the emergence of Binhai New Area and Bohai Sea Economic Ring and the role that these economically vibrant areas could play in promoting the economic growth of north China”. The list of Chinese top 500 enterprises is released. 24 enterprises from Tianjin are on that list, including Motorola China that ranks 30th.

Tianjin TEDA Branch of HSBC opens for business at TEDA’s Binhai Financial Street. HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services institutions running over 9,700 branches and subsidiaries in 77 countries around the globe. This is the first outlet run by a foreign bank at Binhai New Area. It offers a full spectrum of financial services including loan, trade financing, assets management, etc.
September 15
The foundation stone laying ceremony for Taiding (Tianjin) Environmental Protection Technologies Co., Ltd.takes place at TEDA Chemical Industrial Zone. With an investment of RMB 100 million and spreading out in an area of 19,000 square meters, the company is in the business of electronics wastes treatment. It is expected that it will begin operations in 2006. Its annual treatment capacity is 30,000 tons of electronics wastes.
September 23
The Roundtable Meeting on Tianjin’s New Development Strategies and Investment Opportunities of Multinational Corporations, hosted by Tianjin Municipal Government, takes place at TEDA Marriot Hotel. Tianjin’s Mayor Dai Xianglong addresses the audience at the meeting. Executives and China representatives from 37 multinational corporations of 11 countries like France, Germany and Italy are invited to the meeting.
September 27
“2005 International Forum on the Development of China’s Auto Industry” takes place at TEDA Marriot Hotel. While addressing the audience, Member of the Standing Committee of Tianjin Municipal Government Pi Qiansheng says the forum will play an instrumental role in promoting the growth of China’s auto industry, and will also give incentives to the growth of auto industry in Binhai New Area.

Vestas Wind Energy Power Generation Equipment (China) Co., Ltd. celebrates the foundation stone laying for its manufacturing plant at TEDA West. Vestas from Denmark is the world’s largest and leading manufacturer of wind energy power generation equipment. The first phase of the project costs USD 30 million. The plant will become Vestas’ manufacturing base of wind energy
power generation equipment.

“The Fourth Tianjin International Auto Trade & Exhibition” takes place at TEDA International Conference & Exhibition Center.
October 1
Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese President Hu Jintao and Director of the Central Secretariat Wang Gang pay an inspection visit to Binhai New Area and TEDA. They are accompanied by Secretary of Tianjin Municipal Committee Zhang Lichang and Mayor Dai Xianglong of Tianjin. President Hu listens to the report on the development of Binhai New Area and makes an important speech on accelerating the local economic growth.

“The Fourth International Trade and Investment Fair of Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC)” opens at TEDA International Conference & Exhibition Center. Mayor Dai Xianglong of Tianjin makes an address at the opening ceremony. The event offers a total of 650 exhibition stands in an exhibition area of 20,000 square meters.
October 18
Honeywell Industrial Automation Control Systems Plant opens for production at TEDA. The plant is the first advanced manufacturing base of the genre run by a foreign investor in China. It is expected that the value of its annual output will exceed USD 30 million.
October 24
Toyota-FAW celebrates the start of the construction of its third plant and the rollout of Toyota “Reiz”. Key figures present at the celebration include Member of the Standing Committee of Tianjin Municipal Government and Vice Mayor Yang Dongliang, Deputy General Manager Yang Yi of FAW and Vice President Wasehapa Yoshi of Toyota.
October 24
The foundation stone laying ceremony forZhonglian International (Tianjin) Electronics Co., Ltd., a joint venture in LSI circuit manufacturing and R&D by TEDA andSchaumbond Group, takes place at TEDA West. The new joint venture will construct, at TEDA West, an 8-inch and 12-inch chip manufacturing plant, a gallium arsenide integrated circuit manufacturing plant and an R&D center for related technologies. The total investment exceeds USD 2.5 billion.
November 4
“2005 China TEDA Bio Forum” takes place at TEDA International Conference & Exhibition Center. The forum gathers experts, scholars and personalities of various circles who utilize the opportunity to discuss the future development of China’s biotechnologies. Mayor Dai Xianglong of Tianjin addresses the audience.

The Fifth Chinese Lawyers Forum takes at TEDA Marriot Hotel. Mayor Dai Xianglong of Tianjin addresses the audience at the forum.
November 11
Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. celebrates the foundation stone laying for its new plant at TEDA Microelectronics Zone. The price tag of the new plant which manufactures digital cameras and spare parts is RMB 240 million. The construction will be completed in 2006.
November 15
The construction of the second plant of Posco (Tianjin) Steelis completed in TEDA. With a paid in capital of USD 5 million, the plant manufactures cold-rolled stainless steel and electromagnetic steel sheets. Its annual output is 65,000 tons of steel products.
November 17
The Eighth Anti-Virus Asia Researchers Conference opens at TEDA Marriot Hotel, attended by over 60 experts and scholars from around the world. The international anti-virus annual meeting is organized by the Association of Anti-Virus Asia Researchers (AVAR). Formed in June of 1998, AVAR aims to prevent and combat computer viruses and solidify the cooperation among researchers. Its members are mainly enterprises doing research in,and manufacturing, related products as well as anti-virus research institutes.

President of the People’s Republic of Mongol pays a visit to TEDA.
December 1
The celebration for the entry into service of TEDA’s 2# 110KV Substation takes place at TEDA. Director Li Yong of TEDA Administration Committee and Chairman Liu Huiwen of TEDA Investment Holding attend the ceremony. The substation is an important addition to TEDA’s power grid network, further improves TEDA’s power supply structure, and better satisfies the peak demand for power.
December 8
The ribbon cutting ceremony for Tianjin Binhai Branch ofChohung Bank of South Korea takes place at TEDA’s Financial Street. The branch has a registered capital of RMB 10 million. This is the second investment by a foreign bank at Binhai New Area.
December 13
The ceremony marking the opening of Binhai International Factoring Center takes place in TEDA. At the ceremony, Orbrich Financial Guaranty Limited signs a cooperative agreement with Tianjin Branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. Binhai International Factoring Center is the first of the genre in the country. By providing professional factoring services to enterprises, particularly those medium- and small-sized ones, it will play an instrumental role in promoting the exports and imports business of these enterprises.

Kumho Tires celebrates the foundation stone laying for its R&D Center at TEDA West. In his address at the ceremony, Director Li Yong of TEDA Administration Committee says, “Kumho Tires is a world recognized multinational corporation. The R&D Center is the largest foreign investment project coming to TEDA this year. TEDA Administration Committee will provide the best conditions and quality services to fully support the company’s growth.”
December 31
With the approval of ChinaBanking Regulatory Commission (CBRC), Bohai Banking Corporation Co., Ltd. is formed. Bohai Banking Corporation Co., Ltd. is the sole national commercial stockholding bank newly approved by the government in the last decade. It is also the sole commercial stockholding bank that is partly owned by a strategic investor and a foreign giant in the banking industry - Chartered Bank - at the initial stage. Bohai Banking Corporation Co., Ltd. has a registered capital of RMB 5 billion. This new player in the banking industry is 25% owned by TEDA Investment Holding, the largest shareholder.
