An Ancient Coastal Defense (Dagukou)
The gateway to Beijing is Tianjin, and
the "shield of Tianjin" is Dagu seaport. 60 kilometers
to the southeast of Tianjin, Dagu seaport is located
where Haihe River flows into the Bohai Sea. In 1858,
in order to strengthen the coastal defense and guarantee
the safety of Beijing, Emperor Xianfeng of Qing Dynasty
had 6 gun fortifications built here. In the country's
contemporary history, China ruled from Qing Dynasty's
imperial court was exposed to repeated invasions by
western imperialist powers. Dagu seaport gradually became
an important military point by which Qing Dynasty fought
against foreign invasions.
