Wei's Kites
In
northern China, Wei's Kites are highly recognized. They
are very well sold in seasons of spring and autumn every
year. The originator of Wei's Kites is Wei Yuantai,
who was born in Qing Dynasty. His father Wei Changqing
was originally in the business of making shoes. He had
three children, and the youngest was Wei Yuantai. Wei
Yuantai once studied in a private school, but later
he had to drop out of school because his poor family
could not support him any longer. Thus, when he was
16, he became an apprentice in a small kite making shop.
Four years later, his father opened a kite shop for
him and named it "Changqing Shop". From then on, he
started his kite business. His kites were cleverly and
elegantly conceived. The bamboo structures of his kites
were not tied up together with ropes, but glued together.
Every joint had a copper fixer. So, his kites could
be disassembled and folded. A 16-meter long kite could
be put in a 30-centimeter long box after being disassembled
and folded. It can also be conveniently put together
again before flown.
